Review: Sonic Runners is a decent fit for the old hedgehog

The hedgehog is back in Sonic Runners, a side-scrolling runner which Sonic and his friends resume the struggle against Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Runners

You’ll notice pretty quickly that Sonic Runners contains a large dose of storytelling (tap to advance through the dialogue), but it is basically the old-school Sonic action packed into an endless runner; Collect rings, avoid obstacles, and try to not fall off a cliff….the usual. You can use power-ups to collect more rings, etc. If you don’t have enough rings, you can buy more in the game store (for real money, of course).

The graphics are reminiscent of the old Sega console games; there is definitely a retro vibe going on, but the animations are smooth and attractive, and the music has the requisite high energy feel for the game.

The only real control you need for the iOS game is to tap to select special abilities, jump, and so on. The story element is a bit heavy, but if you like a lot of story with your game, you’ll be getting your money’s worth.

This particular iteration of Sonic is a free to play which, of course, means plenty of advertisements; the game requires a connection to the internet so it can stream the ads to you. Some are static screen/pop-up style, some are full-on live action commercials.

Sonic Runners

This title comes over from Japan where the micro purchase option is more widely accepted, but I can’t say I’m a fan of this mode.

Still, if you are a fan of the Sonic series, this might be worth adding to the collection for the classic Sonic action. As for the rest, it’s not hard to skip this one.
